This is the third Blog Scireís podcast. Today we speak about doc2doc the new social network for medical doctors released and maintained by the BMJ Group. We talk about it with Luisa Dillner, Head of New Product Development of the British Medical Journal Publishing Group.

-Luisa, how would you describe doc2doc?

Itís a community for doctors and it would like to be for doctors all around the world. In fact, itís only four weeks old and we have doctors from 40 different countries.

-Whatís the meaning of doc2doc, whatís the aim of this tool?

Well, the aim for doc2doc is to allow doctors to ask questions to each other and find doctors they have worked with or doctors they would like to work with. So we have doctors on the site to have asked if there is another doctor who is interested in researching about Crohnís disease for example. And we have doctors asking questions about careers. So, really it is for doctors who may want to ask something that they could not find the answers to very easily in a medical journal, for example. So, we have an editor who works for one of our journals, and she says that knowledge in the future will not come from medical journals, it will come from doctors themselves on network sites like doc2doc.

-That sounds very interesting, and listen, do you think that doc2doc could be useful for clinical practice too?

†Yes, we hope that increasingly doctors will use the clinical forums on doc2doc to pose questions. So, when we have spoken to primary care family doctors in different countries, they say that sometimes they would like to get hold of a specialist. And if they can pose their questions online, they can get the answers from more than one specialist.

-And do you think that doc2doc could become some day a professional tool for medical education too?

Yes I am sure that thatís the case. I think that doctors can share their learning. And they can also I think by answering other doctors questions be involved in teaching. And they can also identify tools that other doctors may think are helpful for medical education. And certainly when you look to doc2doc I find that I have learned quite a lot already.

-There is the problem of the language. Why should an Italian doctor subscribe to doc2doc? Have you made any plan to help doctors who donít speak English to take part in it?

Well, we do have doctors from 40 different countries. I mean, we have doctors from Brazil, and Argentina, and Russia and Germany, and English is not obviously their first language. Now, what we would like to do is to look at whether we should get doctors to be able to post in their own language. But, with an international site the reality is that most of the doctors are more likely to speak English than other languages and to talk each other in English. We know that from international medical conferences. But we think that part of the very special thing on the site is that it is for international doctors. We have done our best to try make it easy for all doctors to use. But we will be guided by doctors using it in the community. If they say we need to be able to post in our own language, then we would think about whether we could help doctors to do that. And of course the Google translation tool will get better and better.

-How do you check that people who subscribe are real doctors? This is a problem, I suppose.

Well, what we do is that there are parts of the site that are open for doctors to take part. But there are closed clinical forums which we think doctors want to keep closed, for only doctors. And we already have doctors who have sent in certificates they have faxed through or e-mailed something so that we can prove that they are doctors. And really it hasnít be a problem, it means that there is perhaps a one day delay in getting into the clinical forums. But we do our best to verify doctors as quickly as possible. And we are looking how we can make that easier by checking against medical associations in other countries.

†-And in short, Luisa, could it be fun too, to join to doc2doc?

Well I think that it is fun, because I enjoy talking to doctors from different countries. I think that doctors share quite a lot of common experiences that other people do, so I think it is a real community.

-Ok, if you are a doctor and you want to join to doc2doc, go to: http://doc2doc.bmj.com/ . You have to register, but itís free. Thank you to Luisa Dillner for giving us this interview. And thank you to all of you for listening to this Blog Scireís podcast.
